Update
Dear Friends,
As you may have heard, Dad suffered a stroke in July last
year. Tragically he lost most of his speech and mobility,
and now requires close 24 hour care. The stroke is on top
of his memory difficulties, which have become progressively
more challenging for five years or so. However, he may be
in better physical shape than either you or me!...and while
life is a struggle for him (he is 96), he still clearly
enjoys being alive.
He is still at home in New Canaan , and although he no
longer uses the telephone, he occasionally receives visitors.
And in his way, he is still all bioenergetics. Aside from
sleeping, he loves to eat and dance (although he may not
get up to dance).

Hello!
I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina, South America and I've just found this wonderful website!
In the same way, I didn't know about Dr. Lowen's stroke - apparently it must have been in 2006?
I read what his son Fred wrote in 2007.
I would very much like to know about his health of course - he is a wonderful human being according to the few books I've read from him. Hope he's getting better everyday!
We practice Bioenergetics in Argentina almost 3 years from now, and I was browsing along the web so as to see if there were any WORKSHOPS on Bioenergetics going on "somewhere" in USA since I may be travelling sometime in the near future.
I'd love to receive any news about everything related to Bioenergetics - it really changes people's lives!
This is my e-mail - a very good way to contact people all over the world!

Thank you again for everything, and veeeery especial THANKS to Dr. Alexander Lowen!!!
My best wishes,

I want to share my heartfelt thanks for the great blessings that Alexander Lowen has giving me. His blessings have come to me from his books, from the many teachers that I have had that were deeply influenced by him and form one session that I had with him 36 years ago. I was a young women then, 22, on the road, living in a van with my boyfriend. I had never met anyone like Dr. Lowen. His warmth, wisdom and empathy reached deep into my heart. Now, at 58, he has once again influenced me in a profound way. I have begun to do the exercises in the book he wrote with his wife, I am getting bodywork and he has inspired me to become more flexible.
I'm sending you my prayers of love and thanks, your life has meaning for so many people. Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you for leading the life that you have led, for sharing your gifts, for being an inspiration to so many and for your genius.

I do not know Alexander Lowen. But he has given me the life. Six years ago I entered in touch with the analysis bioenergético. It was coming from a family desestructured, I suffered abandon, loneliness, affective physical and psychic lacks, I abuse... Alexander Lowen has returned to me to the life by means of your books, across my therapist who so faithfully applies the technology created by Lowen. The contact with the body has been the best of my life. It had never had it.
Now, I am 30 years old. I have born again and feel for the analysis bioenergético, for Lowen something that I never knew: The love that a son can have to your parents these when they recognize him, they love him and love him.
Lowen has much that to teach me. And more importantly than it, much that to make myself feel.
I like very much his videoes in which I can see as he expresses, since he smiles ... that more agreeable grandfather!!!
An embrace.

Good wishes to Dr. Lowen
I have been a client in psychoanalysis for 6 years. My Analyst recently provided me with a copy of Narcissism, explaining he borrowed from the text while training.
Having read, and now re-reading the text, I am very grateful for Dr. Lowen's attention, work and very unself-conscious caring. It is a healing experience for me to read his words and spend time with his energy.
Thanks, Dr. Lowen. Hope you have a wonderful summer.
Sincerely,

Hi Dr Lowen
My name is Jeffrey Cohen and I was a patient of yours in the 1970's.
I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry to hear that you are not feeling as well as you usually do due to the stroke.
I also want to tell you that I love you and I will always remember you in my heart (Something that I could have never said thirty years ago)
Wherever we go after we " shuffle off of this mortal coil"
I hope to meet you again, so that I can give you a big hug to express my deepest gratitude on how you have affected my life in so many positive ways.
It doesn't matter if you remember me. Just think of me as a wave in the ocean of the people you have nurtured, by the gravity of your being and the brilliant light that your soul provided for those of us who got lost in the dark.
I love you,
- Jeffrey Cohen |

Dear Dr. Lowen,
on a chilly 1st April 2005 I was guest in Your house in New Canaan and I enjoyed those one and half hour very much.
You told me about Your
wife, her beautifull blue parrots, Your love for Your son
and much much more. It was a cold and rainy day for the citizens of New Canaan, but full of sunshine and warmth for a fifty years old "boy" from Germany - for me.
My best wishes, greetings and love to You

Just a quick note to all that today is Dad's birthday. Alexander Lowen is 97 years young today, and I am pleased to relay that he continues to improve since the stroke 17 months ago.
I spoke with him on the phone today, and hope to see him next week. He is pleased to know of our progress with the Foundation.
He has had three visitors today, close friends and well wishers; another group of three had planned to come, but cancelled due to sickness. It would have been a real party!
I am told he continues to enjoy music, company, and dancing, although he still does not get up to dance.
The depth to which he has touched so many people continues to amaze even me.
While he still has not regained his speech or mobility, he does speak very clearly when his emotion is strong.
There is no way to know the future, but I hope and believe he may be with us for quite a few years yet.
Happy 97th Dad, and Merry Christmas. I love you more than you know.

I'm truly sorry to hear of Dr. Lowen's stroke last year (which I just now read about on the current update by his son). I've been a fan of Dr. Lowen's books since about 1971 (when I was 31). I was very screwed up having grown up in an Irish-Catholic very dysfunctional family. His books have been of tremendous help to me and enabled me to heal my schizoid personality. I'm sure Dr. Lowen has helped millions through his books and I know he will die a happy man.

Dear Dr. Lowen,
Last night I completed your autobiography - the fifth book of yours I have read in the last two months. Today I wanted to send you a birthday card for your upcoming birthday, and therefore I called the foundation in Florida to ask for your address in New Canaan. I was referred to this website which I have been enjoying as I have watched the "clips" of you speaking. You are every bit as delightful as I had imagined!
I want you to know that when I read your book on depression, I felt as if you had climbed inside my body and were talking directly to me. To be understood by another human being is a deeply healing experience, and I truly thank you for the wisdom you have worked so hard to discover, embrace and communicate.
I am the daughter of a woman who was a narcicist as well as a brilliant professor in the days when only a few women were university professors. She died of cancer when she was 50 and I was 14. I carried on being her little disciple (i.e. continuing to be "special" for her) until I was approaching middle age. Then I began to dare to become my own self, developing my own identity rather than continuing to be first and foremost my mother's daughter. A lot of illusions have crumbled since then...and the demolition is not yet complete even though I am 63 years old. Your work is inspirational, informative, and helpful to me as I endeavor to now live my life being "fully true to [myself]."
I have just started working with a Bioenergetic Therapist, Shawna Carboni, in the Boston area where I live. I am looking forward to learning more and more about Bioenergetics.
Thank you, thank you for all that you are and all that you have given to me and others.
Sending you love and light for your birthday!

After I graduated Georgia State I moved to NY, looked up Dr. Lowen, and he invited me to his home in New Canaan, and I had the privilege of spending about 1/2 day visiting him. I was a Psychology major, and the boienergetic movement made a lot of sense. At Ga State in 68, I did get to witness Dr. Lowen in action, and I spoke to Dr. Pierrakkos as well. All these years later the lessons I learned are indelible.
After meeting Dr. Lowen and reading a number of his books, I have always felt that Bioenergetic therapy is imperative for lasting improvement. Watching Dr. Lowen in action during the workshop, was most impressive, not to mention instructive, especially seeing the exercises work and the emotional release by the subjects.
I took [this picture] at Ga State College of Dr. Lowen, along with Dr. Pierrakos during the late 80's.

In the last five years I have had the greatest opportunity to bond with Dr. Lowen in the comfort of his living quarters. In his presence I had the blessing of living one of the best experiences of my life. As a fragmented soul, he was the guide that opened up the necessary channels to make me whole again.
In his surroundings I have witnessed many interesting episodes and from the bottom of my heart, I strongly feel I should share at least one of them, with everyone that will have a chance to learn more about this great man that means to me more than a genuine friend, teacher, mentor, guardian angel, role model, and above all, a father figure.
At the age of 94, he surprised me when he asked to go to the New Canaan Library to do research on available material written on orgasm. I must confess I was a bit embarrassed and imagining what could possible go through the mind of a Librarian witnessing this scenario of a woman in her late 30’s accompanied by a 94 years old gentleman, looking for reference material related to this subject. At the end of the process, after reviewing so many different books written on this subject, he thanked the Librarian and told her in a loud tone of voice that he came to the conclusion that the real truth about ORGASM was still to be told and he needed to start writing about this subject from his point of view. Everyone at the Library stopped what they were doing to fully record this moment of a man with determination and free of any taboo. It was an interesting and unforgettable moment.
I could spend an eternity sharing many other, no only wonderful but insightful moments that I have been experiencing in his presence. I’m sure that one day the moment will come for me to do just that.

Recently I visited Al with the help of June Gray, Matthew and Leslie.
It was sad to see Al so disabled and not knowing how much he comprehended. But I was uplifted by his fleeting bright smile and eyes before he lost contact and by seeing he was well cared for, showed no sign of suffering and seemed busy doing what he could to stay lively and interested, in what he had left of himself.
He loved the music that was playing, directing and dancing with his arms. He would intently study the movement of his hands and arms, as though studying them in a bioenergetic way.

I am an italian journalist and a counselor trained in bioenergetics, and I had the chance to meet Alexander Lowen at the end of July, 2002. I spent a wonderful afternoon with him in his house in New Canaan, talking about a lot of interesting things. After that interview, I wrote an article which can be read (in Italian for the moment) in my website www.alessandracallegari.it.
Lowen was 91 and he had lost his wife, Leslie, only in June: but he looked as if he was only 65, and was so full of life and energy, that I remember him with much love.
The photo is one taken by me that day.

What a great way this is to honor Al, and Leslie too, for the work they did so simply, so generously, and so effectively, with patients and trainees around the globe. I saw Al this week. His body is amazingly - and amusingly - strong. We clasped hands and suddenly he was moving my arm vigorously like a rowing machine, sending memories flooding over me of his gentle encouragement to be grounded and present. Glad to have this place to reflect them. Tom

I am so happy I stumbled upon this site dedicated to Dr Lowen. I have great great admiration and respect for him and his work, from which I have benefited for 30 years. His and Wilhelm Reich 's works convey a picture of human life that makes the most sense to me (although I still am far away from understanding in my guts all of what they wrote and thaught). So I continue to study them and work on my body as I can. Let me say that I was very distressed to hear about the stroke Dr Lowen had: this made me very sad. Please convey to him my very sincere best wishes...and my thanks. Marco Ermacora Montreal, Canada
